đx BLKPPLCHURCH
01/22/23
Houstonâs creative community has been thriving, birthing a boom of different events including the classic dj set. One of my favorites to go to is blkpplchurch, which happens at least one Saturday a month at WonderlikeWander. Houston-based DJ, Womon, is the creator and resident DJ of blkpplchurch. Described to be a Nu Pan African Dance Party, blkpplchurch is a spiritual experience. The music moves you like no other, forming a sonic connection that youâd typically gain from hearing a Baptist church choir or a good sermon. With its mix of afrobeats, bounce, gospel, and other anthems of Blackness, it has carved its place in the new era of Houston nightlife.
The last time I went to BPC, I was not prepared for the turn up at all. I had on heels when I really needed a good pair of sneakers. I still cut a rug, but I told myself to come less restricted.
This time, I left the big wig at home and understood the assignment.
You ever have a piece in your closet that you love, but have no idea how to style it?
Okay so boom! I got these leather pants w/ star pockets from Nasty Gal a while back. Baby, I was struggling with finding the best way to style them. Nothing clicked for the longest until this event.
My Icon hoodie was actually a hoodie dress that I decided to cropâanother piece that I had trouble styling. It was a little chilly, so I layered it with my black quilted bomber jacket and my white space boots.
I ended up stepping outside with two of my neos, Indyah and Ennairda. Our first stop was to Nawlins and after that we headed to BPC + danced the night away!
My favorite moment of the night was when Womon and Tay Powers transitioned from âCuntyâ by Kevin Aviance to âPull Overâ by Trina to âIma Readâ by Njenna Reddd Foxxx + Zebra Katz. I loved âIma Readâ so much growing up and I hadnât heard it in yearssssss! It lowkey used to be my theme songâ-mind you, I was 12 when it came out. My inner child almost weeped. FLAWLESSSSS TRANSITION! Plus, the gworls was in there voguing down. I loved every minute AHHH!
By the end of the night, I noticed that my boots had holes in the back. Just worn outtttt! I blame all the dancing I did that night for finally K.O.âing my favorite boots đ They had a great hoorah, honey!
Moral of the story isâŚyou gotta go to blkpplchurch at least ONCE! Itâll be a moment that youâll never forget (and want to repeat 10x over).
Best,
Janaya
