FOXY BROWN/MATERIAL GIRL
01/06/19
I had the honor of doing a shoot with the gifted Sydney Person to close out my looks for the semester. The inspiration for these looks were Pam Grier in "Foxy Brown", Diana Ross in "Mahogany", and the 70s; I wanted to show black women in a powerful, successful light, while also recognizing our history and foundation.
I didn't originally plan to do this shoot on campus, but I'm glad that we did because it complimented my look concept very well.
I took photos in the 2-piece set for the first look in high school, but I felt like it was a necessary repeat. I wanted to show my growth in my style and my personality. Also, because of my creative concept, I wanted to incorporate the strong women in my family. I wore a fro in honor of my maternal grandmother because her fro in the 70's used to look exactly like this.
The second look is a mixture of old and new pieces. The fur coat belonged to my great-great maternal grandmother and my mules belonged to my paternal grandmother. My skirt, shirt, and purse were all thrift finds. I added my old Juicy Couture bracelet to give a rich girl ambiance; all of the charms on the bracelet were wealth-oriented. My glasses were sent to me by Twenty103 sunglasses and the suitcase was an impromptu creative direction; I had to hop on my private jet afterwards so...
I hope you enjoy this look and a special thank you to Jaylah for doing my makeup and to Sydney for letting me model for her. Book them because they're absolutely amazing in their crafts!
